Call for PhD position on Assessing droughts socio-economic impact combining social media and drought indexes

Within the National PhD programme PhD in Sustainable Development and Climate Change https://www.phd-sdc.it/, at Politecnico di Milano we are looking for a PhD candidate on the theme “Assessing droughts socio-economic impact combining social media and drought indexes” in the Socio-economic risk and impacts track (Curriculum CU2).

This interdisciplinary research will develop an IT framework for collecting and analyzing information about droughts from different sources, supporting the study of drought management with new information extracted from social media to provide a richer set of information and methods for estimating the actual socio-economic impact and costs of droughts and how they distribute spatially and socially. The perceived impact retrieved from social media will be contrasted with traditional drought impact indicators. The final goal of the research is to develop more realistic indicators of the social impact of droughts. The focus will be on agricultural droughts at the EU continental scale.

The candidate should have strong analysis and synthesis skills and be knowledgeable in data management and analysis. An MSc in Computer Science and Engineering is preferred.
